What is Respiratory Steaming?

I'm sure you've heard of taking a hot shower when you have a cold, shutting the door and breathing in the steam. Your mom probably told you to do this growing up to help with congestion and cough up phlegm. Respiratory steaming is very similar, but packed with herbal goodness. To prepare a Respiratory steam you simmer herbs in a pot of water to pull out the beneficial constituents of the plants into the water and steam. Make sure to keep the lid on while you simmer for 10-15 minutes. Once the water is ready place the pot on a heat safe flat surface and take the lid off. Tent a towel over your head and breathe in the steam for 10-15 minutes, make sure your eyes are closed! This allows you to breathe in both the humidity as well as the plant constituents in the steam that help your body with whatever it may be fighting. This is a great first step when you're feeling under the weather to give your body a step up!
